Laura Gilmartin

Fiber Artist

I began quilting after retiring in 2009.  I quickly realized piecing quilts was not where my talents lie.  Combining my love for painting and drawing with sewing, I now create one-of-a-kind art quilts.  Using inks, colored pencils, wax pastels, threads, fiber, quality fabrics and photographs, I strive to create depth that draws viewers in.

A friend of a friend, Wil Griego, took this photograph on his ranch in New Mexico.   I saw it as a canvas for my art and with his permission, I started on it in August 2023.

Think he's ready for thread...

He's finished!  Titled "Ride A Painted Pony" from Blood, Sweat & Tears' 1969 song "Spinning Wheel."  The thread painting added all the right textures to the painted fabric, taking it from two dimensial to three.  My thanks to Will for allowing me to work with his stunning photograph!
